History & Founding
Every teacher's dream is to have an impact on each child that steps into their classroom. From this seedling wish, blossomed E3. Starting with one classroom teacher who wanted to reach 30 students came an educator who wants to transform a system. When Dr. JuanCarlos Arauz, the Founding Executive Director, commenced this mission to empower students to identify their own greatest strengths, he wasn't only concerned for the students who sat in front of him, but also for those he would never meet.
E3’s strategy is based on an after-school youth program in San Rafael, which was developed in 2000 by Dr. JuanCarlos Arauz. Over the course of 8 years (2000 – 2008), an estimated average of 57% of Latina/o students graduated high school, and of that number, only an estimated average 8% were eligible to apply to a four-year university. As a result of Dr. Arauz’s program during that same period, 88% of the all identified “in-risk” students who attended the program graduated from high school, and of that number, 72% were enrolled in and went to college. In order to transfer that success to school-wide levels - and create a model that can be replicated across the country - Dr. Arauz founded E3: Education, Excellence & Equity.
